London-based music blog I Am 808 attended Ms. Grey‘s August 22 live performance at XOYO London – read their thoughts on the performance below, and click the title to view the original I Am 808 post.

XOYO London Performance Review | I Am 808 ::
XOYO was the perfect backdrop for Skylar Grey’s first performance in the UK. After being warmed up by the delightful vocals of Daley the ever-growing crowd became energetic awaiting Skylar Grey’s arrival. She appeared looking cool and casual with a bass player, a guitarist and a drummer all in white hooded jackets, the mood instantly changed as she took control of the stage and performed her singles ‘Dance Without You’ and ‘Invisible’.

Of course most people know Skylar Grey as the mastermind behind the choruses in ‘Coming Home’, ‘Words I Never Said’, ‘I Need A Doctor’ and ‘Love The Way You Lie’ which she performed as a beautiful medley at the end of her set. So to hear her perform rock inspired, dark tracks and especially ‘Can’t Haunt Me’ featuring Marilyn Manson was a surprise. Her voice was powerful and distinctive, her performance very polished and she interacted well with the crowd. She may well have the ‘Dido’ effect after featuring on such high-profile tracks, however the material she is releasing is very different from the snippets we’ve seen so far. Watch this space.

Skylar Grey dishes on her idea of sexy! VIBE caught up with the singer-songwriter to chat about everything from her time at Lollapalooza to her time away from the spotlight in isolation. One thing in particular that VIBE Vixen honed in on her love for comfortable fashion and her definition of true sexiness.

She says:
Fashion wise, I like to stay comfortable. I don’t think it’s sexy when girls wear clothes that make them look like their boobs are going fall over or wear clothes with one butt cheek out. I think you can be sexy through your personality and for me the music I make and have that be the driving force behind your sexiness and fashion sense. For me it’s about being comfortable. Of course I love fashion, I love wearing cutting edge things on but, I don’t think it needs to be overly sex-i-fied.

How far removed are you from pop culture and why is that?
Well I grew up in a household without cable so, I’d occupy my time without TV and go walking in the woods and playing with my friends. I’d also play music. I grew up outside that pop culture world, [so] I don’t really see a point, unless you really hate your life, to live vicariously through people in Hollywood because it’s all bullshit anyway. I just like to live my life well and not worry about other people’s lives. I can take a good movie, but as far as reality shows and cowboys, and all that other stuff, I’m so not into it.

What are you favorite tracks from your upcoming debut album Invinsible?
My favorite song off the album is “Final Warning” because it’s a song that shows my newfound personality that I never had before. It’s put in a relationship setting but it’s more about the “You can’t fuck with me” type of feel that it has. It’s probably my favorite song off the album because of the beautiful way it sounds, but the lyrics that aren’t beautiful.

Who would you love to collaborate with?
Thom Yorke, because he’s really my favorite artist in the world. But, I would really love to work in the movie world. Somehow getting into music scores, but we’ll see. That’s my ultimate goal in 10 years to work on movie scores instead of recording albums.
