The Recording Academy will spotlight the careers of a pair of emerging artists on Sept. 28 with Up Close & Personal With Alex Da Kid And Skylar Grey, a program produced by The Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing and The Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter.
Hosted at The Academy’s headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., the event will feature an in-depth discussion with producer Alex Da Kid and singer/songwriter Grey, moderated by radio personality/recording artist DJ Skee. Topics addressed will include songwriting, recording and collaborating with other artists.

Since signing a publishing deal with Universal Music Group in 2009, Alex Da Kid has collaborated with artists such as Nicki Minaj, B.o.B and Paramore’s Hayley Williams. He produced Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie, featuring Rihanna, which garnered four GRAMMY nominations in 2010, including Song and Record Of The Year. In June Alex Da Kid finalized a deal bringing his label imprint, KIDinaKORNER, under the umbrella of Interscope Records. Grey is the first act signed to the label.

In 2010 Grey received two GRAMMY nominations for Song Of The Year and Best Rap Song for “Love The Way You Lie, a song she co-wrote with Alex Da Kid and Eminem. That same year she collaborated with Dr. Dre and Eminem on “I Need A Doctor, and performed the song with them on the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast in February. Invinsible, her debut album produced by Alex Da Kid, is due out in January 2012. The album’s first single, “Invisible, was released to digital retailers in August.

Skylar Grey CCLXXXVI :: Interview w/ Beatweek Magazine

Beatweek Magazine‘s Bill Palmer has published an interview with Ms. Grey, recently conducted at a live performance “….fifty miles outside Los Angeles, in a club with no name….” – check out the introduction to the interview below, click the first photo to view the full-length write-up, and click the second photo to download a free digital copy (PDF) of the current issue of Beatweek Magazine.

Skylar Grey Interview | Beatweek Magazine ::
“….it’s a weeknight, fifty miles outside Los Angeles, in a club with no name on the front of the building. The performer and her backing band take the stage with their faces obscured by hoodies. She asks the audience what the town of Pomona is all about, and upon their silence, realizes that no one in the crowd is local. They’ve all driven out from LA just to get an early glimpse of her solo material. It’s an intentionally under-the-radar night for the artist who’s already known around the globe for singing the title phrase on Dr. Dre’s “I Need a Doctor” as the shadowy figure perched between Dre and Eminem during their Grammy performance, and for being the first voice you hear on Diddy’s “Coming Home. Yet the material from her upcoming debut album touches on seemingly every genre but hip hop, crafting a new kind of pop music which lacks prior comparison. If you haven’t guessed by now, her name isn’t really Skylar Grey. And ‘Invinsible’ isn’t really her first album, although that is the correct spelling of the title. But we’ll get to all that….”

Skylar Grey CCLXXXIV :: UK’s Daily Star+Contact Music | Photo

The United Kingdom’s Daily Star, and ContactMusic.com have both released new articles covering Ms. Grey meeting Marilyn Manson, working with Eminem, and who served as inspiration for her writing “Love The Way You Lie”!

Skylar’s The Limit | Daily Star ::

Contact Music – Inspiring Collaborator Eminem ::
“….Grey enjoyed working with Eminem and says the rapper is an “intimidating and inspiring” collaborator….Grey – who penned the rapper’s duet with Rihanna, ‘Love the Way You Lie’….enjoys working with the ‘Real Slim Shady’ hitmaker because of his “rare” talent.

She said: “Eminem makes fun of me. But he’s a rare breed of an artist that doesn’t come along every day, so being able to be in a room with him and see his creativity at work was both inspiring and intimidating.”

Skylar also revealed that ‘Love the Way You Lie’ was inspired by the “vicious cycle” of her relationships with “assholes”.

She explained to NME magazine: “It wasn’t necessarily about literal violence in a relationship, but that vicious cycle of somebody who keeps you on your toes because they’re kind of an asshole. I do tend to fall for assholes because they keep me on my toes and I don’t get bored. That’s what I wrote it about….
