Top Most Anticipated Pop Albums of 2012 | Idolator ::
5. Skylar Grey, Invinsible

When Skylar Grey wrote “Love The Way You Lie”, she wasn’t well known enough to actually sing it and famously passed along those duties to Rihanna and Eminem. But a lot can change in a little over a year, and her second studio album, following 2006’s Like Blood Like Honey, is now one of the most looked-forward-to releases of 2012. The first release from producer Alex da Kid’s new KIDinaKORNER label, Invinsible has already spawned an eponymous singleand will also feature tracks “Tower”, “Weirdo”, “Dance Without You” and “Can’t Haunt Me” (featuring Marilyn Manson).

Skylar Grey CCCXXXVIII :: Live @ The Sayers Club, Rolling Stone | Photo

Rolling Stone magazine has released a lengthy article written by Melissa Roth, regarding Ms. Grey‘s impromptu performance at the The Sayers Club in Los Angeles last Sunday morning (November 6). The article gives details on her special performance of Room For Happiness, as well as several industry executives and fellow musicians that were in attendance.

Read the following excerpt of the article, and click the photo below to view the full-length feature.

Grey Experiments | Rolling Stone ::
“….few things are ever fully planned at the Sayers Club in Los Angeles – much less rehearsed. So when a string quartet settled in to perform “Room for Happiness” with Skylar Grey in the wee hours of Sunday morning, it was the first time they’d even seen the performer….Grey has been slowly crawling out of the shadows as a solo artist. Her Interscope debut, “Invisible, a fitting eulogy for her once-faceless songwriter, just reached Number 14 on Billboard’s Dance/Club chart, right above Beyonce’s “Countdown” and Taylor Dayne’s “Floor on Fire”….

Grey opened with a medley of her familiar hooks….the audience settled down and became her chorus. Singing along from the couches was Dayne herself, who’d performed “Floor on Fire” on the same stage Thursday night. Over the weekend, she was there just to watch.

Dressed in a black leather jacket, jeans and ski hat, Grey sang her haunting ballads about isolation, hurt that feels good and emptiness that leaves room for happiness. It was a powerful, if brief, performance, one that could mark a turning point for the 25-year-old: Two of the biggest names in the music business, Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine and Live Nation’s Michael Rapino, had come out to see her.

Grey finished her set with a cover of Radiohead’s “Idioteque. Not what you’d expect from a woman best known for collaborations with Diddy, Lupe Fiasco, Eminem and Dr. Dre.

But now she’s gotten the seal of approval from someone who’s quietly emerged as one of the most influential bookers in town: Jason Scoppa, who opened Sayers Club with L.A. nightlife king Sam Nazarian, who gave Scoppa his own venue and carte blanche to do with it as he pleased. Scoppa had become known for booking talent just before their careers take off; Bruno Mars used to play at his weekly Hollywood showcases not too long ago, as did Cee Lo Green and Young and the Giant’s Sameer Ghadia.

Just as daunting is the increasingly high profile crowd that surrounds the stage, inches away, and with them all the heated expectations. Will this be the next Bruno?

None of the pressure seemed to faze Grey. She’s in no hurry to top the charts, she confided to Rolling Stone after the show – “Better to grow a career over time than have a quick rise.” But nothing intimidates her right now. “All the success I’m having now, I really can appreciate it. But I also know that I don’t need to rely on a single thing to be happy.”….”

Skylar Grey CCCXXXIV :: Beatweek Magazine+Pop & Hiss, L.A. Times | Photo

Several reviews of Ms. Grey‘s November 1 showcase at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles from press that were in attendance have been making their way online – check out what Beatweek‘s Bill Palmer and Gerrick D. Kennedy from the Los Angeles TimesPop & Hiss blog had to say about the performance!

Grey Comes Front and Center | Beatweek ::
“….last month I told you that Skylar Grey is the future of pop music, and last night at the Roxy she took another step toward proving it….her own solo material is percolating ahead of the eventual release of her debut album. And aside from a few minutes in which she sat down at the piano to remind people of the places in which they’ve heard her collaborative work, her Roxy set was all about strutting her own stuff.

Pouncing around the stage, belting out rockers like Weirdo and Dance Without You, she uses her lyrics to tell the story of her own past life, the one where she didn’t have a tenth this much confidence, the one she’s so emphatically divorced herself from that she even changed her name in order to help change her mindset. Weirdo still sounds like it’s eventually going to be the biggest hit of the bunch, but the focus for now is officially on the mid-tempo lead single Invisible, which not coincidentally deals with the same subject matter. I saw her perform largely the same batch of songs this summer at a venue out in the suburbs. I was impressed with her performance then. I’m more impressed now. The confidence and polish are growing. The Roxy was sold out last night and packed with people, some of whom knew the words to some of her songs which haven’t even been released….I stand by my assessment that she’s the future. It looks like more people are starting to come to the same conclusion….”

Grey Steps Into Spotlight | L.A. Times ::
“….perched behind a piano on the tiny stage of the Roxy on the Sunset Strip, Skylar Grey reminded the sold-out crowd why she has amassed such an industry buzz.

“Over the past year and a half, I’ve had a fortunate time with music,” she said before launching into a medley of the ubiquitous pop hooks that put her on the map….prerequisite medley aside, Grey previewed tracks from her upcoming debut album, “Invinsible, using her first Los Angeles showcase to illustrate that she’s more than just hip-hop’s go-to hook girl.

When Grey was the cover girl of L.A. Times Magazine in June, she said she didn’t want to be seen as looking for attention by dressing a certain way, and she reinforced this on Wednesday night: With little more than smoke, shadows and a backing band, Grey emerged onstage in her de facto look: a beanie, leather jacket, jeans and boots.
“We’ve kept a mysterious launch to my whole career,” Grey told the magazine. “I want to ease into the view of the world and let my music do the talking.” That mystery remains present: She sang most of the thumping opener, “Building a Monster, with her back to the crowd.
Her music pushes and pulls at the edges of pop/rock and peddles the same epic cinematic landscapes as the hooks she penned. Songs such as “Dance Without You, an anthem about independence, and “Weirdo, are radio-ready, while others such as “Tower” and “Final Warning” brim with a dark loneliness that might prove tougher to digest for some.
“Invisible, her somber first single, is instantly catchy, with poignant lyrics of isolation and inadequacy, though it is odd to see the mid-tempo sitting on Billboard’s Dance/Club chart alongside Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga.
Grey explained this stylistic blend to the magazine, saying she was “able to create a sound that is very commercial, but there are also elements of avant-garde. I don’t think anybody’s doing what we did on this album.” Her appearance at the Roxy didn’t completely answer the question of who this singer is — but maybe she wants it to remain that way….”
