Skylar Grey CL :: ARTISTdirect Interview+Adam Lambert+Performances | Video

ARTISTdirect (who awarded “Dance Without You” 5 out of 5 stars) recently shot a video interview with Ms. Grey, talking about the theme of her upcoming record Invinsible, why she named it that, and how it relates to the controversial 1978 psychological war film The Deer Hunter. Read an excerpt from the article below, and click its title to access the full article and video interview!

Skylar Grey – Video Interview+Article | ARTISTdirect ::
“….Grey haunts and hypnotizes on her debut album, Invinsible. Grey’s unique, ethereal croon makes for dark pop that transfixes on every hook and hum. She’s the alternative to absolutely everything out there and, in the process, she might just save modern music. Think of a mix between Portishead’s spacey genius and Fiona Apple’s soulful sonic caress, and you’ve got Skylar Grey. However, she’s even more than the sum of those part….Grey is about to change music (and the world)….”

Adam Lambert has also given Ms. Grey’s “Dance Without You” praise via his Twitter account, stating “….Skylar Grey- Dance Without You. SOOOO fresh!!….”. Examiner’s Boston Celebrity Headlines writer Maria Parece wrote an article regarding the Twitter post, which you can read below.

Grey Receives Praise From Lambert | Examiner ::
“….Adam Lambert had kind words to say about Skylar Grey’s “Dance Without You” on Monday….Adam Lambert’s endorsement of Skylar Grey’s first promotional buzz single is certain to broaden the rising star’s audience. Although she has already been nominated for a Grammy, the publicity related to Lambert’s high opinion of her work can help bring her even more success….”

There also currently three live performances scheduled for July (in Pamona, San Francisco, and San Diego, California), prior to Ms. Grey’s big Lollapalooza performance in August. You can view the full list of performances on the official Skylar Grey Facebook by clicking the following photo.

Skylar Grey CXLVII :: “Invisible” Initial Reactions, Part II

And now on to the next round of first-impressions that “Invisible” has gotten since its radio release last Thursday (June 16)! Be sure to click the links to view the reviews in their entirety as well.

MuuMuse – Single Review ::
“….enter Skylar Grey….while “Invisible” will probably be one of the saddest songs to (potentially) impact radio in a while, the song demonstrates the beauty of embracing the hurt rather than swallowing her sorrows into yet another anthem: It’s a raw, visceral pain that doesn’t feel patronizing in the least–a far cry from being asked if I’ve ever felt like a plastic bag floating in the wind. Skylar gets it. ‘Nough said….”

Ace Showbiz – Grey’s Official Single ::
“….she doesn’t stray away from the dark theme introduced in the “Dance Without You”. She powers this new drum-driven track that comes from production hands of Alex da Kid with some mellow, and brooding lyrics….”

Stupid Dope – “Invisible” ::
“….Grey characterizes her mood with overwhelming feelings of sadness & excessive feelings of worthlessness….Grey is withdrawn from experiencing pleasures & unable to refrain from feeling “Invisible”….”

ALi’s Blog – New Music, “Invisible” ::
“….The beautifully devastating Alex Da Kid-produced track was co-written by Skylar and Rob Thomas (Matchbox 20). She is giving me a total Dido vibe with this one and I’m excited to hear her album….”

Gowhere Hip-Hop – “Invisible” ::
“….I can see why she was saving this one. Skylar Grey croons an emotional and well-written record on said hook (and beyond) in this new single….setting yet another melancholy, yet cinematic tone behind the boards, Skylar Grey, with co-writer Rob Thomas (of Matchbox Twenty), paints a picture of self-reflection and insecurity (strikingly established from the song’s first notes) that I think we can all sit back and understand, plus perhaps draw parallels to as well. It’s one both the ladies and the fellas will appreciate as “Invisible” should increase Skylar’s already fast-rising fandom as we officially head into her breakout summer as a solo artist….”

Skylar Grey CXLVI :: “Invisible” Initial Reactions+SPIN Interview

After the world-premiere of “Invisible” (the first official single from Invinsible) yesterday, the online music community took to posting their thoughts on the track, and how it compares to “Dance Without You”. Check out a few of the reviews below!

Rap-Up – New Music ::
“….she’s penned hits for megastars such as Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Diddy, but Skylar Grey still feels “Invisible” on the first single from herKIDinaKORNER/Interscope debut Invinsible, coming this fall. Produced by Alex Da Kid and co-written by Skylar and Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas, the darkmidtempo is for anyone who’s ever felt overlooked….”

PopCrush – “Invisible” Song Review ::
“….thanks to her head-turning, raven-haired good looks and her voice, which is equally honeyed and icy, Grey is more than just a blip on our radar. However, her song is an ode to feeling alone in a crowded room and feeling like no one can see the real you. The song addresses the notion of image, and the battle between the real you vs. the you that people see. It’s weighty subject matter encased in a pop song….Kudos to Grey for saving a hook for herself instead of being a selfless songwriter and passing it off to another pop artist to perform! She deserves it….”

GlobalGrind – Grey Is Far From “Invisible” ::
“….Grey has done it again, this time with the first single “Invisible”….a simple, yet powerful beat lets us clearly hear Skylar’s cry for well-deserved attention….Give your ears a treat and check out Skylar’s single “Invisible”….”

AOL’s The Boombox – Grey Stands Out ::
“….Skylar lays her airy vocals over the mid-tempo beat in this teen angsty song about going on unnoticed and ignored….”

Skylar Grey – The Changeling | SPIN ::
“….when her as-yet-untitled debut arrives in early fall, it’ll likely do more business in its first week than Holly Brook’s album has in five years. That notion makes Grey smile. Not because she’s gloating, but because she and Holly Brook are one, if not the same. ”I’m proud of the music I used to make….but I was capable of things that I couldn’t do while I was her….I wasn’t smart,” she says. “I made this quiet album after being on a pop radio hit. I didn’t know how to be authentic and sound pop. But before I could, I had to fix a lot about myself….

Skylar Grey CXLV :: “Invisible” Lyrics

Ms. Grey just released her lyrics for “Invisible” on her official Tumblr, The Grey Area – you may read them below.

Skylar Grey – “Invisible” Lyrics | The Grey Area ::
I take these pills

To make me thin

I dye my hair

And cut my skin

I try everything

To make them see me

But all they see

Is someone that’s not me

CHROUS:

EVEN WHEN I’M WALKING ON A WIRE

EVEN WHEN I SET MYSELF ON FIRE

WHY DO I ALWAYS FEEL INVISIBLE

INVISIBLE

EVERYDAY I TRY TO LOOK MY BEST

EVEN THOUGH INSIDE I’M SUCH A MESS

WHY DO I ALWAYS FEEL INVISIBLE

INVISIBLE

Here inside

My quiet hell

You cannot hear

My cries for help

I try everything

To make them see me

But everyone

Sees what I can’t be

CHORUS

Bridge:

Sometimes, when I’m alone, I pretend that I’m a queen

Its almost believable

CHORUS
