Martin Hardee – zOMG Skylar Grey Live!! | Lines Overlapping ::
“….Skylar Grey at the Rickshaw stop in San Francisco was easily the most amazing musical event of the season. I say that having seen probably fifty bands this spring and summer, and passionately enjoying most of them. But Skylar and her music were memserising and surreal and on another plane….the set list at the Rickshaw was over before we knew it, but every note was magical, and it was a marvelous journey….”

Skylar Grey CXCVII :: San Gabriel Valley Tribune, July 29 Article

Ms. Grey will be performing in Pomona, CA tomorrow evening (July 30) at The Glass Shop, and Wes Woods of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune talked with her about the upcoming performance – read the full article regarding the performance below, including information on the opening act Curt Phillips.

It’s Like Skylar Grey Is A Whole New Person | SGV Tribune ::
POMONA – Headlining act Skylar Grey performs here Saturday to warm up for Lollapalooza on Aug. 6. And here’s another reason for local fans to check out the show at Glass House. The warm-up act, Curt Phillips, has area ties.

“I’m basically previewing the songs off my album for the first time in these shows,” said Grey, whose real name is Holly Brook Hafermann. “So it’s going to be a lot of material people haven’t heard before, but also mixing in things people have heard.”

Grey, who performed at the Grammy Music Awards with Eminem and Dr. Dre, was featured on their hit song “I Need A Doctor” and was featured other hits like Lupe Fiasco’s “Words I Never Said” and “Coming Home” with P. Diddy’s Diddy-Dirty Money group.

Her latest songs include the Internet-released video “Dance Without You” and “Invisible, which has been featured on the Ryan Seacrest radio show.

Grey said her hour-long set will not include songs from her previous alias Holly Brook, who was featured as a guest on Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go” and released an album of her own.

“No, Holly Brook is dead. I’m not that person.”

Now 25, she released her album “Like Blood Like Honey” in 2006 and has completely changed her outlook from “mistakes” she said she made previously.

“I’m stronger, I’m actually talking to people now,” Grey said. “I was a recluse, shy and didn’t want to talk to people. Now I’m promoting myself. I’m realizing there’s a certain way to play the music industry game so it works to your benefit.”

Grey said her soon-to-be-released November album “Invinsible, a combination of the words invisible and invincible, would showcase the transfer from Holly Brook to Skylar Grey.

“Not only for myself because I hated Holly for being such a weakling but also I didn’t want people to have preconceived notions of what I do,” Grey said. “It sounds completely different. Everything is different.”

Her website can be found at www.skylargreymusic.com.

Meanwhile, opener Phillips works as a maintenance employee at Western Christian Schools in Claremont.

He is currently at Biola University in La Mirada majoring in organizational leadership scheduled to graduate in December.

“I’m really stoked about the show,” Phillips said, adding he went to Upland High School, Pioneer Junior High and Pepper Tree Elementary all in Upland.

He used to be guitarist in the Orange County band Rudiger, who performed on the Vans Warped Tour, but when the band broke up he went solo and later decided to go to school, too.

“I’ve learned you can sell a million records and not make a dime,” said Phillips, 30. “That’s what I learned from the artists I’ve played with. But I love playing music and using music to touch people and inspire them.”

His music can be found at www.myspace.com/curtphillips.

Grey’s Journey from Being Holly Brook | San Francisco Examiner ::
“….what a long, strange trip it’s been for the Mazomanie, Wis.-born Holly Brook Hafermann, who reinvented herself in Hollywood as Holly Brook on Linkin Park’s Machine Shop label with her “Like Blood, Like Honey” debut, but then nearly disappeared before she finally rediscovered her puckish R&B muse. Now 25, she re-christened herself Skylar Grey, spun out hits for other artists such as Eminem (“Love The Way You Lie”), Dr. Dre (“I Need A Doctor”) and T.I. (“Castle Walls”), and is at last releasing her Alex Da Kid-assisted album “Invinsible, which chronicles her surreal journey from invisible to invincible. She plays Popscene tonight….”

As was mentioned in the article, Ms. Grey will be performing at PopScene at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco tonight (July 28), and you can find details about the performance venue below.

Skylar Grey CLXXII :: “Coming Home (Solo)” Feedback+Zimbio | Photos

Ms. Grey‘s July 9 rendition of her solo version of “Coming Home” for the Dalai Lama in Washington, DC has been getting positive feedback, including some from Marcia McIntyre, who performed violin live during the performance – check out what she has to say about working with Ms. Grey, as well as what CBS News, NY Daily News, Pop2it, and PopCrush have to say about the performance.

Marcia McIntyre, Violinist ::
“I was the first violinist in the quartet backing Ms. Skylar Grey at the peace event on July 9th. Quite simply, this day will forever remain a highlight of my life. “Coming Home” is an absolutely breath-taking song, the arrangement by Simon Hale was so tastefully written and I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with such a professional as Skylar Grey…..thank you, thank you, thank you.”

CBS News – Grey Performs for the Dalai Lama ::
“….Grey’s performance in Washington on Saturday had a notable special guest in the audience – the Dalai Lama….the singer-songwriter performed for the Tibetan spiritual leader as part of the Kalachakra for World Peace event held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol….Grey sang a new version of “Coming Home, the hit she co-wrote for Diddy-Dirty Money….”

NY Daily News – Grey Performs “I’m Coming Home” ::
“….Grey got the opportunity of a lifetime on Saturday: she sang in front of the Dalai Lama….the singer — best known for lending her vocals to Diddy Dirty Money’s “I’m Coming Home” — performed a new version of the hit song at the Kalachakra for World Peace event held in Washington, D.C., which drew 20,000 people to the West Lawn of the Capitol….”

PopCrush – Grey Sings for the Dalai Lama ::
“….in her relatively short career, singer-songwriter Skylar Grey has performed with Eminem, Diddy-Dirty Money and Lupe Fiasco. But singing for the Dalai Lama has to be on the top of her “Wow, I Can’t Believe It” list….the ‘Dance Without You’ singer performed….as part of the Kalachakra for World Peace on the West Lawn of the US Capitol. Grey sung a new version of Diddy-Dirty Money’s ‘Coming Home, a song she originally penned, in tribute to the Tibetan spiritual leader….”

Pop2it – Grey Performs for the Dalai Lama in DC ::
“….if the Dalai Lama had an iPod, we can’t imagine it would include anything from Diddy Dirty Money, but that didn’t stop the Kalachakra for World Peace event from tapping “I’m Coming Home” vocalist Skylar Grey from singing for his holiness during his recent visit to Washington, DC….the Washington Post reports 20,000 people turned out to the event at the National Mall, which saw Whoopi Golberg emcee, the Dalai Lama speak and Grey singing her popular tune. Quite the honor for an artist whose first solo album hasn’t even been released yet….”

Zimbio has also posted some higher-quality versions of pictures from the event, which you can view below.
