The buzz caused by “Dance Without You” is still spreading, with people posting their thoughts on Ms. Grey‘s first solo offering, and what it means to the current state of music – check out two more reviews below!
Will Skylar Grey Destroy Pop Music? | Elliot Morgan :: “….a storm’s a-brewing….Fortunately for all of us, the coming of the Grey is nigh….“Dance Without You” is a symbol of where pop music should go. Clocking in at less than three minutes, the song lacks a lot of things: pretension, shock factor, and glitter. What is does have is soul, a hook, and if I’m not mistaken, a message….I hope Skylar Grey destroys pop as we know it. If nothing else, at least she’s rescued dance….”
Skylar Grey, New Song “Dance Without You” | MTV Buzzworthy :: “….Skylar’s own music leans a little more toward the harder side of ’90s female alt-rockers….with a stormy industrial vibe, the song begins with a syncopated, unadorned staccato beat-box track, which ultimately serves as an excellent precursor to Skylar’s signature ethereal vocals….and just because this song isn’t pure pop doesn’t mean that Skylar’s pop sensibilities as a writer didn’t kick in. Skylar delivers a MAD hooky chorus….a chorus that we’re sure will make quite an impact on radio, as well as in our heads, considering it’s been stuck there since our first listen….”
GlobalGrind has also just released an exclusive Skylar Grey interview that they conducted just before “Dance Without You”‘s release earlier this week, and you can read the 5-part interview by clicking the logo below.
Exclusive Interview – Outdoor Bathrooms, Chopping Wood, and Lying | GlobalGrind :: “….Now that songwriter/singer Skylar Grey is no longer in the backdrop, we all want to know why it took so long for her to get in the limelight….with the recent release of her single “Dance Without You,“ there’s no doubt that Skylar is a breath of fresh air to the hip-pop scene….”

Among the large amount of positive buzz that “Dance Without You” has generated since it was released on June 6th (for free and a day early, thanks to Ms. Grey), ABC News’ Allan Raible wrote a review stating his thoughts on the song, in part calling it “….one of the coolest, freakiest sounding singles to drop on a major label in over a decade….”. Read an excerpt of his review, as well as several others below!
On The Record Review | ABC News :: “….“Dance Without You” is no mere song. It is a two-minute and forty-seven second sonic revolution….This is the kind of strange groove that Tricky and Martina Topley Bird used to be able to create with ease, but hearing this within today’s pop context, it seems like a real breath of fresh air….Skylar Grey is definitely someone to watch….“Dance Without You” is set to appear on Grey’s album, “Invinsible,” which is set to be released in the Fall. (Yes, that is the way the title is spelled.) Judging from this single, expectations should be very high. I honestly can’t wait to hear her album in its entirety. “Dance Without You” is pop at its strangest and its best….”
5 out of 5 Stars | ArtistDirect :: “….nothing quite compares to “Dance Without You”….The song is dangerous, divine pop music….Grey is the most entrancing frontwoman since Beth Gibbons, and she’s going to take pop to another realm. …the track exudes a noir-style David Lynch sense of dark elegance, and it’s bound to make you think and sing along….If this is any indication, her forthcoming full-length INVINSIBLE is bound to be one of the best albums of 2011. Welcome to Skylar’s world. Welcome to the future….”
Grey Drops “Dance Without You” | Billboard :: “….In anticipation of the fall release of her debut album “Invinsible,“ Skylar Grey has issued an intense teaser track….“Dance Without You” finds Grey pushing her vocals to a new extreme as she delivers the anthem for independence over massive drums. “Take your hands off me, take your hands off me/Before I suffocate,“ she shouts in the breakdown….”
Grey Releases “Dance Without You” | KOVideo :: “Grammy nominated song-writer, Skylar Grey, has finally released her anticipated track “Dance Without You”….The song is different to much of the other work she has produced….The song is a venture into new territory that only she is going to define….”
“Dance Without You” Song Review | PopCrush :: “….The word that comes to mind when listening to “Dance Without You” is “weird” — but a good kind of weird….Grey probably wasn’t shooting for the vibe of an early ’90s female-fronted alt-rock band, but, with its dreamy vocals, distorted guitars and quirky production, that’s kind of where “Dance Without You” ends up….“Dance Without You” is a buzz single that Grey hoped would get people talking about ‘Invinsible.’ Consider that mission accomplished….”
Rap-Up also did a quick interview with Ms. Grey on the red carpet during her surprise appearance at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, where she talked about Invinsible and shooting two music videos (for “Dance Without You”, and “Invisible”) – check out the video via YouTube below!
Through an official press release circulated today (June 7) by Interscope Records, the names of several more tracks off of Invinsible have now been revealed, including “Invisible” being named as the first official single to be released later this month. Check out selections from the official press release below.
Official Skylar Grey Press Release, June 7 | Interscope :: Grey’s INVINSIBLE, produced by Alex Da Kid, will take listeners by storm with a breathlessly original sound – a sonic exploration in darkly brooding yet beautiful vocal textures, innovative beats and biting lyrics. From “Invisible,“ the first official single, slated to be released soon, to INVINSIBLE, the album represents the unveiling of Grey, who has remained much of a mystery to this point.
“I have been working so hard with Alex on this music; I’m excited it’s finally going to be out there for everyone to hear. I won’t have to describe it anymore, because the music can finally speak for itself,” says Grey. “Also, I’m very influenced by film and it is my hope that when people listen to my music, they are consumed with vast, cinematic imagery.”
Lyrically, the album’s songs, which also include “WEIRDO,” “BUILDING A MONSTER,“ and “FINAL WARNING,“ chronicle the transformation Grey has made over the past few years as she has struggled to find her place within the music industry. “Building A Monster,“ in particular, chronicles the process Grey has taken from invisible to invincible – the two words the album’s title play on. The album will include one, soon-to-be-announced feature collaboration. A full track listing will be announced in the forthcoming months. Grey’s first live solo performance has been announced for Lollapalooza in August and more dates will be announced in the upcoming months.

The Singles Bar – “Dance Without You” | PopDust :: “….Grey’s pre-ordained solo career is happening right on schedule. Last month, she said she’d release a buzz single in “a few weeks,” and here it is! But is it as cinematic, fun and dark as Grey said it’d be? More than your wildest dreams.–for two out of three, at least….”
Skylar Grey Rips “Dance Without You” | GlobalGrind :: “….Grey, the 25-year-old artist on the rise, has released her first track called “Dance Without You” from her album dropping later this year. The catchy drum beats and alternative style compliment her sultry voice….”
Grey Loses Herself in “Dance Without You” | Idolator :: “….given that she made a rare public appearance at the MTV Movie Awards last night, maybe Skylar Grey thought the time was right to unleash the full version of her buzz single “Dance Without You”? (We will say that she chooses her nights to step out into the spotlight wisely.) With singer-songwriter Grey literally the go-to girl for choruses these days….it’s about time we got to hear a solo offering from her — especially given that she’ll be taking the stage at Chicago’s Grant Park for a Lollapalooza performance in August….”
