Skylar Grey CCCLXVI :: Year-End Lists, XXL+MTV+Zimbio+USA Today

With the end of 2011 nearing, Ms. Grey has earned mentions in several year-end lists and charts – check out several by XXL Magazine, MTV, Zimbio, and USA Today below!

XXL Magazine has published its list of its picks for the Top 100 Songs of 2011, with “Words I Never Said” (Lupe Fiasco feat. Skylar Grey) and “I Need A Doctor” (Dr. Dre feat. Skylar Grey & Eminem) both making the list! You may view each tracks placement in the list below, and also click the title to view the full list and vote for your pick for the Top Song of 2011!

Top 100 Songs of 2011 | XXL ::
33. Dr. Dre ft. Eminem and Skylar Grey “I Need A Doctor”

41. Lupe Fiasco. ft. Skylar Grey “Words I Never Said”

VH1 has published MTV’s list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011 – Kaskade came in at Number 8, with Ms. Grey earning a mention for her collaboration with Kaskade, “Room For Happiness”!

Best EDM Artists of 2011 | MTV ::
“….Kaskade watched as his 2011 studio album, Fire & Ice, quickly became a staple in a healthy EDM diet. With features from Skrillex and Dada Life, and even vocals from rising star Skylar Grey, you’d be hard-pressed to find music lovers who couldn’t identify with or enjoy his breezy music in one way or another….”

Online magazine Zimbio has also released its picks for the Best Electronica Songs of 2011, with Kaskade’s official remix of the current Skylar Grey single “Invisible” making it on the list at Number 8!

Best Electronica Songs of 2011 | Zimbio ::
“….she’s been nominated for a Grammy, collaborated with Dr. Dre and Lupe Fiasco, and appeared alongside the Dalai Lama. And yet, despite all her success, few people could actually spot Skylar Grey if she walked by them on the street. Of course, her relative anonymity didn’t stop heavyweight DJs like Kaskade and Dirty South from remixing her first single, “Invisible. The result: seven minutes of bass heavy bliss….”

Finally, USA Today enlisted electronic producer Moby, DJ Scott Henry, and Billboard-writer Keith Caulfield to pick the most spin-worthy electronic artists of the year – once again Ms. Grey gains a mention within the write-up for Caulfield’s artist pick, Kaskade.

Spin-Worthy Electronic Artists | USA Today ::
“….the double CD Fire & Ice, includes collaborations with Neon Trees, Skylar Grey and Skrillex. In July, Kaskade (aka 40-year-old Ryan Raddon) tweeted that he’d be DJing at a block party ahead of the L.A. film premiere of the documentary Electric Daisy Carnival Experience. So many fans showed up that the party was shut down and riots ensued….”

Skylar Grey CCCXLVI :: “Room For Happiness” Reviews – Billboard, Washington Post, Tiger Newspaper

Along with currently making it to Round IV of V in PopCrush’s Sound Off competition (VOTE HERE), “Room For Happiness” has still been receiving positive press and reviews, several more of which you may read below!

Album Review | Washington Post ::
“….DJ/producer Kaskade (born Ryan Raddon) is one of the longest-running and most commercially minded of the current crop of electronic dance music artists. He specializes in mainstream-friendly house tracks, often with female guest vocalists, and when “Fire & Ice” sticks to this mandate, it does just fine…..“Fire” and “Ice” rely heavily, but not unwisely, on guest stars such as Skylar Grey and the suddenly mighty Skrillex, who underplays his usual wobble for the occasion….”

Album Review | Billboard ::
“….“Room for Happiness, featuring a spirited vocal by Skylar Grey, reads like a lyrical companion to R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts, convincing a tired friend to keep on keepin’ on. “Let Me Go” vocalist Marcus Bently might be the guy Grey is talking to; it’s introspective and dark, with a smudgy synth adding to the tension….”

Contrasting Tones | Tiger Newspaper ::
“….on Ice, the best remix is easily “Room for Happiness, featuring Skylar Grey. It keeps an upbeat sound similar to other songs on the album, but has a less electronic feel….”

Kaskade Interview | Rolling Stone ::

I need to work with this person.”

Skylar Grey CCCXXXVIII :: Live @ The Sayers Club, Rolling Stone | Photo

Rolling Stone magazine has released a lengthy article written by Melissa Roth, regarding Ms. Grey‘s impromptu performance at the The Sayers Club in Los Angeles last Sunday morning (November 6). The article gives details on her special performance of Room For Happiness, as well as several industry executives and fellow musicians that were in attendance.

Read the following excerpt of the article, and click the photo below to view the full-length feature.

Grey Experiments | Rolling Stone ::
“….few things are ever fully planned at the Sayers Club in Los Angeles – much less rehearsed. So when a string quartet settled in to perform “Room for Happiness” with Skylar Grey in the wee hours of Sunday morning, it was the first time they’d even seen the performer….Grey has been slowly crawling out of the shadows as a solo artist. Her Interscope debut, “Invisible, a fitting eulogy for her once-faceless songwriter, just reached Number 14 on Billboard’s Dance/Club chart, right above Beyonce’s “Countdown” and Taylor Dayne’s “Floor on Fire”….

Grey opened with a medley of her familiar hooks….the audience settled down and became her chorus. Singing along from the couches was Dayne herself, who’d performed “Floor on Fire” on the same stage Thursday night. Over the weekend, she was there just to watch.

Dressed in a black leather jacket, jeans and ski hat, Grey sang her haunting ballads about isolation, hurt that feels good and emptiness that leaves room for happiness. It was a powerful, if brief, performance, one that could mark a turning point for the 25-year-old: Two of the biggest names in the music business, Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine and Live Nation’s Michael Rapino, had come out to see her.

Grey finished her set with a cover of Radiohead’s “Idioteque. Not what you’d expect from a woman best known for collaborations with Diddy, Lupe Fiasco, Eminem and Dr. Dre.

But now she’s gotten the seal of approval from someone who’s quietly emerged as one of the most influential bookers in town: Jason Scoppa, who opened Sayers Club with L.A. nightlife king Sam Nazarian, who gave Scoppa his own venue and carte blanche to do with it as he pleased. Scoppa had become known for booking talent just before their careers take off; Bruno Mars used to play at his weekly Hollywood showcases not too long ago, as did Cee Lo Green and Young and the Giant’s Sameer Ghadia.

Just as daunting is the increasingly high profile crowd that surrounds the stage, inches away, and with them all the heated expectations. Will this be the next Bruno?

None of the pressure seemed to faze Grey. She’s in no hurry to top the charts, she confided to Rolling Stone after the show – “Better to grow a career over time than have a quick rise.” But nothing intimidates her right now. “All the success I’m having now, I really can appreciate it. But I also know that I don’t need to rely on a single thing to be happy.”….”

Skylar Grey CCCXXV :: “Room For Happiness” Initial Reactions

Along with PopCrush’s review of the song, Room For Happiness (the just-released collaboration between Ms. Grey and Kaskade) has been getting an overwhelmingly positive response after its early release on Monday (October 24). Check out a host of reviews below!

Grey Hits The Dance Floor | Idolator ::
“….Grey wears melancholy like the rest of us wear socks, so it’s a pleasure to hear the “Invisible” singer keep her sunny side up on her collaboration with Kaskade, “Room For Happiness”. The chill-out tune, off the DJ’s new album, Fire & Ice, features euphoric dance beats as Grey implores the listener, “Don’t be fooled by your emptiness, there’s so much more room for happiness.” Tell that to the Skylar we see in the “Dance Without You” video….”

Kaskade & Skylar Grey Make A Little “Room For Happiness” | AMP Radio ::
“….with her mysterious demeanor and angelic ice-cold vocals, Skylar Grey makes any song sound ethereal even if the lyrics are oft-times depressing. This time around, Grey joins dance DJ, Kaskade, for something a lot more sunshine-tinged and positive with “Room For Happiness. From Kaskade’s new album, Fire & Ice, Grey shows us something different than her Invisible persona. This song could easily be the chilled dance-hit of the winter….”

Skylar Grey (NEW MUSIC) | GlobalGrind ::
“….Kaskade has released another club banger with “Room For Happiness” featuring Skylar Grey. As another DJ/producer on the scene with poppin’ house music, Kaskade has joined forces with Skylar for his latest dance track. Skylar, who’s known for her vocals on Diddy Dirty Money’s “Coming Home” and Dr. Dre’s “I Need a Doctor, sings on the track: “Don’t be fooled by your emptiness / There’s so much more room for happiness.” This track is definitely rave-worthy and will surely be another #1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play for Kaskade….”

Grey Gets Clubby | The Prophet Blog ::
“….Grey has sold out to cheap dance trash! Nah, I’m just kidding. The alt pop-rocker is actually just a featured vocalist on Kaskade‘s new album, Fire & Ice. Skylar lends her sublime voice and songwriting skills to Fire & Ice’s closing track, “Room for Happiness”. Anybody with ears knows that the girl can sing her ass off, but the strength of “Room For Happiness” really lies within the lyrics, which really shine over the top of the sleek, throbbing electronica of America’s Best DJ, Kaskade. The angsty doom & gloom of Skylar’s usual lyricism sounds positively up against Kaskade’s club beats, and the hopeful hook bring out the euphoric feeling that dance music delivers….”

“Room For Happiness” | SongOnLyrics ::
“….Skylar Grey and dance music… those are a few words we never thought we’d see in the same sentence. But apparently she did it… she’s the featured vocalist on Kaskade’s new single titled “Room For Happiness”. The single will be included on America’s Best DJ’s upcoming new album, “Fire & Ice”. The lyrics are written by Skylar herself and we must say that she didn’t let us down not one bit. Listen to the song carefully, it’s very impressive….”

America’s Best DJ Delivers | ChubbyBeavers ::
“….Grey, among others, is a singer/songwriter who I have been desperately awaiting to get into the EDM game. Her voice is impeccable, so it’s great to see a producer like Kaskade grab her and place her on a melody that accentuates her vocal ability….go out and buy this album, A PHYSICAL COPY, listen for days, and appreciate artistry….”
